In India
In India is a selection of pictures I made while living and working in India between 1978 and 1989. It’s impossible to encapsulate my experience in India in a sentence or two but I can say that my life there gave me a humility I hadn’t learned as a white middle-class man born in postwar America. During the enforced stillness of the pandemic, I revisited my contact sheets to make this expansive, personal reading of my Indian work—one that I could not realize until now. Two thirds of these photographs have never been shown or published.
