Hoh Rain Forest
These pictures from the Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park mark a shift in Mitch Epstein’s landscape work. Epstein has mostly photographed nature in relation to society (American Power, New York Arbor, Rocks and Clouds), whereas he has focused on the Hoh forest’s pristine, nonhuman environment. A quiet rapture infuses these photographs, which subvert the romanticism of conventional landscape photography to instead describe the forest’s delicacy and primeval energy.
