In 2008, Mitch Epstein won the Berlin Prize in Arts and Letters and was awarded a six-month residency at the American Academy in Berlin. While there, Epstein set out to examine Berlin's layered and famously tormented history by photographing the concrete remnants of its war and postwar histories as they integrate with contemporary life.
