In Pursuit of India
By Vince Aletti
Mitch Epstein: "In Pursuit of India" is an affectionate, insightful portrait of a country and its people; Epstein's landscapes always have a human anchor, his figures are rooted in their environment, and his color is so visceral, you can taste it. In one of his more exuberant shots, a wide view of the valley town of Jaipur is framed by the billowing arc of white fabric held by two men in the foreground, Epstein balances these broad views with more intimate work: a group of women, arms entwined, at a wedding; a pair of young truck drivers at the wheel; a trio of boys in a bright blue tea shop.
